Matthew 27:1-10
1 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death. 2 They bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor. 3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.

4 "I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood."

"What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility."

5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money." 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me."

"Now this man [Judas] bought a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out." Acts 1:18

Personally, I don't believe it. From what I've read, it contradicts the gospel canon, so I'm inclined to believe that it's not authentically retelling history. I don't doubt that the document itself exists, but I'm just critical about what it has to say. Not that I believe all the Apocrypha is bad though. I'm rather fond of the bed-bug story in, um...oh dear. I forget which Apocrypha gospel it's in, but that one has a very good moral to it. :)

Because I believe that Jesus would've died anyway had Judas not betrayed Him (for the Father and Son decided upon the plan of salvation long before the Fall of the World, found in Revelation 13:8 "...the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world." [English Standard Version]), I believe that argument to be invalid. Isaiah 53 talks about the death of the Messiah way before Jesus in human incarnate or Judas came onto the scene.
